Maximize the Longevity of Your Coffee Beans

Maximize the Longevity of Your Coffee Beans

Your home coffee experience is heavily influenced by how you store your coffee. Once that coffee bag is opened, the clock starts ticking as the beans lose their freshness when exposed to air. Signs of stale coffee beans include a lack of creamer and challenges dialling in your espresso.

Avoid the common mistake of leaving your coffee in the open or inside the grinder. I always recommend single-dosing your coffees—measure out the coffee grams you need and store the rest properly.

Here are a few effective ways to store your coffee at home:

  1. Resealable Bags: Many 250g coffee bags come with a resealable feature. Keep it simple by storing your beans in the original packaging. After each use, reseal the bag, pushing out all the air to maintain an airtight seal.

  2. Airtight Containers: Invest in an airtight coffee bean storage container. You can find affordable, simple options or more advanced electric containers that create a vacuum to preserve freshness.

  3. Freezing Method: If you like me and enjoy different coffee origins but consume only one or two cups daily, consider freezing your beans. Properly frozen beans can last an additional 6-12 months. Pack beans in single doses or small batches for this method, and vacuum-seal if possible for the best results. Alternatively, use a ziplock bag and make it as airtight as possible then freeze your coffee.

By following these storage tips, you'll ensure that your coffee beans stay fresh, allowing you to enjoy a flavorful cup every time you brew.

👨‍🍳 Recipe of the week

Vietnamese Coffee

Here is how you make it:

  1. Start by placing the sweetened condensed milk in a heatproof glass or mug.

  2. Using a Vietnamese coffee filter (phin), add the coarsely ground coffee into the filter chamber.

  3. Place the filter over the glass or mug containing the condensed milk.

  4. Pour a small amount of hot water (about 1/4 cup) over the coffee grounds to wet them, then wait for about 20-30 seconds to let them bloom.

  5. After the coffee grounds have bloomed, slowly pour the rest of the hot water into the filter chamber, filling it to the top.

  6. Allow the coffee to drip through the filter into the glass or mug. This process may take 4-5 minutes.

  7. Once all the water has dripped through, stir the coffee and condensed milk together until well combined.

  8. Add ice cubes if you prefer your coffee cold.

  9. Enjoy your delicious homemade Vietnamese coffee!

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of coarsely ground Vietnamese coffee (such as Trung Nguyen or Cafe Du Monde)

  • 2 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk

  • Hot water
